How to design a predictable and transparent information structure

On 2 out of 3 sites users have trouble finding the information they're looking for because it's not where they expect it to be.

This seminar teaches you some techniques to make sure that:

  • The information on your web site or intranet is the right information.
  • The information is structured the way users expect.
  • Users understand the terminology you use.
Programme:
  1. Well-structured information
     - Definition of information structure
     - Consequences of a badly structured site
     - No goal? No use
  2. Charting the information
     - Inventory of the existing information
     - Wish lists
     - Your competitors' sites: look and learn
     - Useful input of (potential) users
  3. Selecting the 'right' information
     - Harmony between information, goal and target audience
     - The economic value of different types of information
     - Limit the information
     - Put the user first
  4. Structuring information
     - Your structure and terminology are not the same as the user's
     - Let users decide
     - Use cross-links in grey areas
     - The final structure as basis for graphic designers, programmers and copywriters
  5. Implementing the information structure on the web site
     - Different types of web sites and navigation systems
     - Homepage: which information goes where?
     - The importance of overview pages
     - Clicking and scrolling: debunking the myths
Result:
  • You learn which information to put on your website and which information to leave out.
  • You learn to structure information so users find what they're looking for fast.
  • You learn to translate the information structure into a transparent and predictable navigation.
  • You learn to fill in the information structure with the appropriate content.
